I am trying to figure out where this spring goes on the engine. I had it labeled 'throttle' but it seems to stretch the spring too far with throttle closed. Can someone help me out here and tell me where this spring attaches?

Re: Spring location

I realize this may be like suggesting closing the barn door after the horse has already escaped... ;) ... but for future reference, it is always a good idea to either sketch a drawing, or better yet, take a picture before you start disassembling.

Here's a pic I took of a carb I was working on. It may not be the same as yours, but it may give you an idea of where to put the spring:

No question about it - I made a rooky mistake. I did take pictures. I have some 395 images of this project but I did not take closeups of some very critical parts B4 dismantling! As a heads-up to anyone reading this thread and contemplating engine/outdrive removal (or anything else you plan to tear apart in the boat) - take very good clear pictures of everything B4 starting dis-assembly! You will be very glad you did. I started my boat restore 07/31/2009 and now that I am putting it back together, it's busting my balls figuring out where all the thousands of bits and pieces go!

Would still like a little more conformation of this springs proper location. Anyone have a port side picture of a Rochester Quadrajet mounted on a mid-80s 305? The area of the throttle connection? This is where the spring is currently attached.

Re: Spring location

My first thought when I looked at the picture was "That spring is in the wrong place. It's trying to open the throttle and it should be closing it." So I open the manual (pity you said 'mid -80s' as manual #3 goes 1978 to 1984 and Manual #9 goes from 1985-1989) and here's what I found.... You have the spring in roughly the right place. From what I can see on the photo the carb end of the spring should be on the lower side of the throttle cam.

Thanks Chris, I put it where you indicated and it seems to make more sense. Will try and start engine after 2 years of storage as soon as I get fluids added. Probably should have stated it is a 1984 305sbc. Apparently from what I read that was the last year B4 major changes where made.
