I am going to look at a boat to purchase this weekend; 1987 Sunbird Eurosport I 18', 3.7L 165hp, $~2G. New battery, all the ropes, jackets and the out drive was rebuilt 2 years ago (new U-joints, impeller, and seals), and more more extras.

The boat was winterized by the marina and I going to start the motor with the ear muffs, check the compression, check the engine oil and check for any coolant leaking because the boat has a closed loop system.

Is there any thing else that I need to check before I start the motor?

Does any one have an opinion about the Sunbird brand?

Sunbirds are nice boats. :)

You have most of the bases well covered. Make sure the battery connections are clean and tool-tight or you could damage a very expensive voltage regulator. See if the front motor mount lagscrews are good and snug in healthy wood. Look for stress cracks in the transom radiating from (or concentric to) the drive mount.

They're strong motors, but very intolerant of overheating. The voltage regulator connections and the magnets in the harmonic balancer are two other big concerns.

Don S provides most of the info...a boat and motor approaching 20 years old can set you back a fair amount of money if something goes wrong so don't over look the basics, particularly compression check, #4 cylinder tends to be the most problematic on this engine.

On the 3.7L a few other particulars to look for are:
1. Coolant leak at the water pump, its driven off the cam shaft and if the seals are worn it could be a major job involving engine removal.
2. The water cooled voltage regulator must have been replaced atleast once or twice in 20 years. How recently? Or if the charging system has been converted to an alternator that's a huge plus.
3. Ignition system - still points? For $90, you can upgrade to a premium electronic ignition and put and end to difficult starts. Has the ignition system been upgraded?
