Stick it into the core of the spark plug wire and some can be crimped and others such as the spring....sometimes need to be twisted on.

I tried that the first time. The motor would miss and not fire correctly because the plug wire was loose.

What keeps the wires from coming out of the boot or from loosing a good connection?

Strip the end of the spark plug wire, 1/4". Now divide the core wire in half, folding it back. Place the spring clip against the center of the stripped core wire and force the point into the insulation, so that is pierces the core wire. The core wire that was stripped, should touch the spring. Now use some WD-40 to lube up the rubber boot. Force the boot over the spring clip. The boot will hold the spring clip in place, and it will make a solid electrical connection.

I tried something similar to this and when I was pulling the plug boot, the wire pulled out of the plug boot. The spring clip is supposed to snap onto the plug correct? So when pulling the plug boot off, the spring clip stayed on and the wire pulled out. I was pulling on the plug boot itself, not the wire.

Are all coil replacements like this? Seems like the original OMC's I had are not like this and more secure.

It obviously is not supposed to do that. I suspect you have not correctly installed the boots over the springs. You should see the springs when looking into the end of the boots. The tightness of the base of the boot holds the spring clip into the center of the wire.

Re: Spring clips for spark plug wires?

I got my new Sierra ignition coil in today. The spring clip has a 90-degree turn on the end vs. a straight end. So I stripped of the insulation, split the wire into 2 parts as noted above, inserted the 90-degree turn of the spring wire perpindicular into the insulation (vs. into the core wire as noted by others) and kept the spring close against the end of the insulation. Then I took the wire strands and twisted them together tightly over the top of the visible portion of the spring clip on the bottom side of the plug wire. It now has 2-3 points of contact and after inserting it into the boot, it's solid! I feel confidant that this will maintain contact and not pull apart like the previous coil wire did. I'll reinstall it like this one and my problem will be solved.

This is the boot/spring clip I have.

Those are what I had expected you to have. I never considered that they could be the straight ones. I apologize if I mislead you....
