Is there a difference between the 1974 25 hp Evinrude and the 25 hp Evinrude Sportster? The reason I ask is that my Sportster does not match the exploded drawing in the Seloc manual for the 1971 and on 25 hp motors. My motor appears to be a cross between a 9.5 hp and a 25 hp. There is no water jacket cover on the head and the thermostat is installed vertically. What gives? I'm trying to do the tell-tale mod and nothing appears as it should.

The 25hp Evinrudes of the 1970's were all "Sportsters". You have a 22 cubic inch motor that was originally designed way back in the 1950's as 18hp. At some point in the 1980's, the 22 cubic inch motor was dropped and the larger 35hp was de-tuned to make 25 and 30 horses. So there are two basic 25hp motors, explaining the big difference when you compare them.

EDIT: Ain't no way in heck any 25 even resembles a 9.5. Well maybe the magneto.

Thanks. My motors thermostat is installed in the head from the top (vertical). All of the drawings in the Seloc manuals show it going in from the back (horizontal). My motor doe not have a water cover on the head as it shows in the manuals. The head is just bolted to the power head. The model number of my engine is 25402M. That crosses to a 1974 25 hp. If that is any help.

Never mind. I just realized what a piece of dung these Seloc manuals are. I have ordered an OEM manual that just covers the 1974 25 hp Sportsters. Thanks again for the reply.

Just for the record, a 1974 is the 22 cubic inch motor. As you already realize, it is very much different than the newer 25's.
