Hi

I am looking at two sportcraft 270 fisherman and would like some feedback on this boat if anyone knows these boats, how they handle seas, it looks like the freeboard on the boat is very small and front heavy, did not know how they do in rough waters and any other info would be really helpfull, I have a 25.5 sailfish now and was going to trade for one of these due to liking the hardtop encloser and inboard set up
please let me know

Re: sportcraft 270 fisherman

I have always enjoyed the layout of these boats and find them appealing, however I have been warned about them for many reasons, which would require more research and knowledge than I was interested in doing. In general quality is the main concern that was brought to my attention. I'm sure others will chime in that actually owned one. I elected to not purchase on based on the information (in general) that I received.
That said I think they look like a heck of a fishing boat, and in Michigan, on the great lakes, they are popular because of the stabil ride they offer. They can be gas hogs if you are running twins, but beyond that I dont have first hand knowledge.

Great fishing boat. I owned a 30' with twins for about 10 years and had problems with the stringers. Check for transom and stringer rot and you should be good to go. I traded up to an express cruiser (see avatar) for some quality cruising time. As a fishing boat, amenities are frequently overlooked.

I have a 252 that is used on Lake Ontario and Chesapeake Bay. The boat handles worse conditions than the people on it do. Before 1997 these boats did have some stringer problems due to the limbers just being drilled holes. In 1997 they started glassing tubes into the holes and many of the stringer rot issues were at least delayed. Definitely have a survey done before you buy.

I have a 222 (22'2"), and really like it. Mine is an '84, which is supposed to have the stringer problem, but I've been fortunate so far. I'm on the Gulf, and routinely go out when other won't. I would just get a survey.

Have 1986 270 with twin 470 Merc I/O's and a tower for about 15 years and love it. We go over to the Bahamas on her frequently from April - September when the seas are 3' or less. Head seas over 3' can be wet but she handles well. Our boat is a bit stern heavy but the tabs take care of it. When the seas are 2' or less it hauls butt with a top end of 45 mph. All in all it is a great older boat and the lack of freeboard near the stern has never been a problem.
