Sport Jet Fuel Pump Problem

I have a 1997 120XR Sport Jet, Serial # OE260151 in a Sea Rayder F14.

The fuel pump needs annual rebuild because the diaphram is not ethanol resistant.

The pump will not pull fuel through a standard spin on filter/water separator.

Is there a way to convert this engine to a better fuel pump that will not need so much maintenance?

Have you used an OEM diaphragm kit from Mercruiser?
I would think by now all the manufacturers use materials in their kits that are ethanol resistant, even the aftermarket companies. Do you use any types of additives in your fuel?

Yes, I used Merc parts but the dealer says that they are not resistant.

I use Stabil Ethanol Treatment in the fuel.

I was wondering if something like an electric pump work give me more reliability?

Check the label on the packaging. The first diagphram I got had an older month/year date on it. They may be using old stock.

Re: Sport Jet Fuel Pump Problem

I ordered a Sierra kit and installed it. Unfortunately this kit did not seem to provide the level of quality seen with the Merc parts but the pump is now working.

Now I have a problem with the engine stalling out at planing RPM. It will start and idle fine but will lose power at planing speed and then surge forward for a few seconds only to lose power again. At full throttle setting the engine will run for less than 3 seconds then shut off completely. It restarts immediately.

Any ideas?

UPDATE:
I was able to use the boat after the fuel pump rebuild but it was not running well.
I took it out twice and the second time it began to missing badly, fell below planing speed and then threw a rod through the side of the motor!
