I took my family out today in my Bayliner Jazz today. I got stuck on a sand bar (didnt see it or know it was there). After freeing myself, i continued on back to open water and the moter died. I think it overheated (strange?). I was able to restart after much effort (and lots of start fluid) seems to run fine, and then quit again. I radioed someone to tow me in, started the boat again and trailered. After out of the water i inspected the grate, and it was not obstructed. Question-What happened, and how do i fix????? Thx

you most likely sucked sand in the cooling system.

only 3 types of boaters, those that have run aground, those that will, and those that lie about it.
next step is a compression test, after that I would pull the head and check it for warpage.
they are noted for warping heads. would be a good time to inspect the cyl walls and clean the sand from the block.
if it all looks good reassemble as per the service manual and keep boating. post in the force or mercury section as its a 3cyl force motor.
I was a sugar sand(mirage) dealer for sometime and still have the drive manuals up to 95.

ok-i yanked the exhaust manifold, and the head. Also, droped the ride plate. Dosent seem to be enough sand to cause an overheat????? Is there a water pump on these things, and were is the water intake, and out flow? After i clean it, and put all back together, i would like to know if it is circulating. thanks

the cooling water on that rig comes from the jet.

R&R the t-stat if it's gunky. at the very least test it in a pan. w/ a thermometer. i'd think it's sand to in the intake. sounds like rodbolt is the man on the sportjets though, he's got the mauals and experice. i'd think not on leavein the t-stat out. bad idea. as for how it cools, rodbolt leads me to believe that it cools like a pwc. out the high pressure side, a resriction occors at the nozzle, forces water into the cooling passage right before the restriction....that'd be a geuss, so take it for what it's worth...rodbolt??? where it exits, i don't know...so a sportjet is a force ay,,,,hum.
oh, don't quit boatin just because ya hit something, geez, anyone that's been boatin for a bit will let ya know what 'they' hit,,,or almost hit. lets see, i've hit rocks, sand bars, garbage in the river, can't tell ya how many weeds i've cleaned off a outboard, chucks of wood that get sucked up in a jet. rocks that cause impeller damage,,, i am gonna keep boatin till i'm out of bread.... :D . at this point, i'd think that servicein a jet is easier service than a i/o.. i got's a lot of issues with my i/o. the drive on a jet is direct. no movin parts. i have appricieation for a jet drive. those jazzes, look fun... hang in there, boatin is dangerous man... :D

yep thats about how the cooling system work. there is a small hole with an oring in the impeller housing that feeds water to the engine adapter plate.

Learn something new everyday about my jets. Thought the O ring hole was the drain to keep the water from standing in the block and the big one inch hose coming from the pump the inlet water.

Just looked it up, check the big hose on the rear and back flush it. That's the inlet hose for the incoming water.
