You can remove the nut by simply clamping the shaft in a vice. But you still need the socket to properly retighten it with a torque wrench. Improper torque can be disasterous. "Local" could include a Johnson or Evinrude dealer. It's a special socket of course, and I'm not aware of anything else that will grab it. However, I haven't tried anything else since I have the right tool.
