I need to cut a lowrance transducer (has built in surface temp)to do a completely hidden install. Can I splice the wires back together and continue to have the transducer work properly? Thanks in advance.

Can be done, Bassher, but it should be done by a trained pro.

Good luck. :)

Re: Splicing transducer cable

No matter who does it, splicing the cable will void any warranty. On the other hand, doing it really isn’t that big a deal. The manf’s warranty concern is that you will not get a water tight seal on a spliced cable. Water can work its way inside the cable from the slice down to the transducer, frying the 'ducer. Now you know. You’re on your own…good luck. :)

Can you route the end that plugs into the unit so that it's hidden? Might be an option to cutting it. Do a search on this forum for "Transducer" and you will find people who have spliced them with no apperent affects, but....

Basher, I just did that exact thing last week.
If the transducer has a temp probe there will be
2 wires and a twisted uninsulated wire wrapped in foil, The 2 wires are yellow and white. The other
2 wires blue and black are used for the transducer
send and receive. They are also wrapped in foil.
If you cut them be sure to used heat shrink tubbing and 60/40 solder reconnect them. donot use crimp on connectors. It will work just fine.

Re: Splicing transducer cable

There is a clean way to do it. Airmar makes a junction box just for splicing in transducer cables on one side and then pigtailing out to the fish finder on the other side. Actually they make cables and plugs for most fish finders that you can simply connect on one side of the junction box and they also sell a lot of transducers with no plug at all on the data cable, just bare wires to go to their junction box. Its a very nice feature for boats that install a high performance transducer at the time of manufacture, not knowing what fish finder will find its way into the boat. You can get them from Gem Electronics in South Carolina.

Thom
