I was just talking to a group of teachers this morning about Splenda. They praised the stuff because it is made from real sugar. I also remember a thread a couple of months ago that also praised Splenda. I've never tried the stuff, but it got me wondering about it.Then, I bring up my Netscape this evening and come across this article about Splenda. Lawsuits saying Splenda is not made from sugar, but made of chlorine. I like to share information, so if you're interested here is the story. Splenda
Bassy :)

Re: Splenda lovers, look at this.

The article, Bassy, says that Splenda is made from sugar by replacing 3 HO groups with chlorine atoms. The claim that it is made "from sugar" is valid.

That does not say it is made from chlorine.

There is no claim that the product is "natural", whatever the heck that means.

Makes about as much sense to claim that salt is made from sodium, a deadly poisonous metal.

Re: Splenda lovers, look at this.

Quote from article:
"We feel the public needs to be aware that Splenda is an artificial chemical sweetener. Splenda is created with chlorine, and the final product does not have sugar in it,".

I see your point,JB. But if they're calling it sugar, it isn't by the end of the process. But mentioning the word sugar is great marketing. Makes you think it really is sugar, but it just isn't.

Actually, salt is not only made from sodium metal, a highly unstable and explosive metal, it is also made from chlorine, a very toxic gas.

We need to ban salt today. :D

But first we must take quick action against dihydrogen monoxide. (do a google search on the dangers).

Bassy, sorry to make fun of this, but really there is no harm in the clorinated sugar. Probably much safer than the other artifical sweetners.

Ken

Re: Splenda lovers, look at this.

They said it is made FROM sugar not made OF sugar.

They take real sugar and then clorinate it.

And dont confuse the term chlorine with the cleaner/swimming pool additive "chlorine".

Two totally different things:
Chlorine gas is the element. Salt is made from the reaction of sodium metal and chlorine gas.

"Chlorine" the cleaner is actually sodium hypochlorite, a powerful oxidizer.

Ken

No apologies,Ken. Just trying to keep up on things. If I need to change my mind, then that's what'll happen. I don't know enough about this to really draw a conclusion. Just checking it out in case I ever decide to try artificial sweetners.
Bassy

Kenimpzoon.
It is the dihydrogen(dihydrite)monoxide which is deadly when inhaled that we should banish from our homes.

Given time, we shall all find out that there is nothing good for us.

It's those evil corporations I tell ya! They're out to kill us all! All in the name of profits.

Wait a minute... if the corporations kill everyone for profit... how will they profit after we're all dead???? Hmmmmmmmm.......Nevermind!

Re: Splenda lovers, look at this.

None of that chemically laced artifical stuff for me, i'm done with listening to all of that marketing crap which we seem all too ready to embrace. I remember when Quaker oats was supposedly good for you, then it was bad for you, then it became good for you again, then there's Vioxx and celebrex, questions now being raised about Aleve, perhaps Viagra may be next, who knows,(sorry SBN :p ). When will we as a people start to think for ourselves? instead of rushing out and supporting the latest fad that is pushed by these modern day snake-oil peddlers. This rant made me feel better :D Now i must return to the task of getting rid of these (^%&*%#$ pop-up's
