The marketing guys are very good at telling us who drinks what around the world. They tell us how the Scotsmen like their Scotch Whiskey (reliable sources would confirm this), the Russians like their Vodka (confirmed), the French like their Brandy (yep) and the good ole boys South of the Dixie like their Bourbon.

If I believed what I see in the advertisements, the only question a barman needs to ask in a Southern State bar is "Jack or Jim?" - or maybe Southern Comfort ? A good ole boy would slam down his glass on the table and walk out in disgust if it "Ain't Jim Beam". Does Jack really live there ?

My question to my friends from the Southern USA is, what's the real story ? What's your favourite drink and what would you nominate as the most true and representative spirit of Southern USA ?

If you're not from Southern USA, what's your favourite and what spirit would best represent your area ?

(I'm still thinking about my answer).

Kiwi,

If the truth be known, there is probably more beer consumed than anything. But, if it's the hard stuff it's Jack Daniels, while listening to Charlie Daniels.

Here in Arizona, it's beer-definetely. The harder stuff dehydrates you.

Re: Spirit of choice

Having spent a little time in local bars I have come to the conclusion that most folks prefer Crown Royal followed by Jack then other things. There is a lot of Gin consumed by the upper class rednecks but most folks here drink Jack because of price. Beer is the most common drink consumed with a variety of that being common. Everywhere down here had Bud on tap if they have a tap unilke what I found in parts north. In fact the group I was with had free bar brand beer and bud was considered a premium because they did not sell much of it. Also we drink a lot of PJ also known to our northern brethren as Wapatuli it is a fruit juice/punch fruit liquor mixture at parties.
Now as far as personal prefrence I like mixed drinks over shots either whisky sour (by the glass) or Alabama Slammer made by the pitcher. I also like a little homemade shine every now and agian. Personally I make wine and a cordial most folks love my cordial while they say my wine is too strong/dry. In my defence no i am not an alcholic but I do drink however I have not had anything (except at after Graduation bought by the principal) anything stronger than Beer in 3 months with about 3 or 4 beers since the first.

Howdy, Kiwi.

In Texas, we do our own thing. We are not "joiners" to what someone else does.

My brother is a blended Scotch or sour mash Bourbon drinker. Likes Black Jack or Wild Turkey.

My son is partial to single malt scotch, MacAllens 12 or 25 year old. He also prefers Sam Adams beer.

I drink Chivas Regal or Royal Salute, neat. I also like Becks Lager, Kirin, or a Chinese beer I don't immediately recall the name of.

Since none of us are in the poorhouse, it should be obvious that none of us drinks a lot. :D

In Mary's Land, the home of the Chesapeake Bay Md Blue Crab, we drink Foster's beer (no rules, just right) when the crabs are running, but all other times, I am, like my license tag says, a WINELVR.
And in my house, wine only comes in one color .... red.
I have also been known to make a mean pitcher of margheritas after mowing the lawn... but that's another story!

Re: Spirit of choice

In NZ there is no particular pattern as to what spirits people drink and a lot just prefer to drink beer. I was thinking of this over the weekend when stocking up for a large family gathering. There seemed to be equal numbers drinking Bourbon, Scotch, Gin, Vodka, Rum, Martini etc.

It dawned on me that a lot of Bourbons claim to be the favourite of the Southern States. I picked up a new one I hadn't seen before called "Mississippi Moonshine" which was quite drinkable - tasted similar to Southern Comfort - quite nice.

My favourites are Johnny Walker (especially black and gold labels), Gentleman Jack, Chivas Regal...often drink Jim Beam, Jack Daniels too. I only ever drink any type of whisky "on the rocks".

JB - Becks is one of my favourite beers too.

Millers, Guiness, Steinlager (NZ brand), Fosters (Aussie brand) are also often found in my fridge.

...thanks for your replies.

Re: Spirit of choice

Burbon otherwise known as whiskey is a southern thing and advertised as such as it was first made in the south. Most famously Kentucky. This might help explain the advertising.

Alway's been partial to tequila. No, not cuervo but good tequila like El Jimmadorra and other true Mexican brands. And most definately beer, beer, and more beer. I normally drink Moosehead, and also like black & tan's. Hey JB, is that Sapporo your thinking of, actually a Japanese beer.(also a very good beer.)

Around here it's generally beer, any kind as long as it's cold, or Jagermeister. Personally I'm a Jack Daniels drinker.

Hey 62_Kiwi
I remember Steinlager from my old days in the Peace Corps in Samoa. All my Kiwi mates used to drink that or Leopard (maybe that came from old samoan sandal rinse???)
Fun times back in the early 70's. Spent many a night under a grass tent at Aggie Gray's hotel in Apia, drinking 40 cent shots!
those were the days!

Hi Mare,

Yes, Steinlager is probably New Zealand's best known beer brand and has been around for a long time. Unfortunately Leopard (another old NZ brand) is no more, which is a shame as it wasn't a bad drop.

Sounds like a nice posting in Samoa! :)

Re: Spirit of choice

i may be alittle different, cause i've never liked dark liquor(bourbon)... probably due to my cousin getting me kneewalkin,12hr black death hungover drunk on Evan Williams back @ 14yrs old.
i did drink alittle of it after a few yrs once i started hittin the clubs, i guess maybe Wild Turkey. but i would say probably Mezcal Tequila or clear mixes like Kamikaze's were the norm back then.
i'm a beer drinker, normally Miller Lite at home, or if i have something at a company outing, then Sam Adam's or Corona.

I never could understand "lite" beer. You pay the smae or more for it and it is just one third more water-huh?

I don't think any beer is diet beer. I had a co-workewr who was forever on a diet. I would watch him wash down a Snickers bar with a Diet Coke and proclaim he was sticking to his diet.
