I would like to get some input from all the knowledgeable people on this board, regarding spinning and baitcasting. While I am more proficient and comfortable with spinning equipment, (Shimano Sustain and Shimano Stradic reels on Fenwick Techna AV 6 ½’ rod and Loomis GL3 5’10” Mag Light rod respectively), I also own a baitcasting outfit (Ambassadeur Morrum 3600 reel And 6’ St. Croix Avid series rod). My accuracy and distance are better with the spinning equipment. What situations are more advantageous to use baitcasting equipment over spinning? Should I put my spinning rods down and practice more with the baitcasting equipment? I should also mention I live in northern Illinois and fish Wisconsin, Illinois and Kentucky, mostly for smallmouth, largemouth and from time to time walleye.

Hi, Johnnie.

Baitcasting is harder to learn to use expertly.

I find baitcasting much more accurate than open faced spinning gear simply because your thumb is a very precise brake.

Spinning, on the other hand is easier (for me) to cast long distances.

Re: Spinning vs Baitcasting

I generally use my spinning gear with lighter line and smaller baits. I prefer baitcasting with larger lures or in cover where heavy line is needed. With practice you should be just as or more accurate with a baitcaster although maybe not as long. Also there is virtually no problem with line twist. Just watch out for that PROFESSIONAL OVERRUN.!! Practice in the yard first - it's a lot less frustrating than giving up fishing time while on the water. Good luck.

In my opinion, for LM and SM, a baitcaster is the way to go. You can sling your lure into openings in the lilly pads, under trees, and open spaces in the weeds. Learn to use it well and you won't use a spinner for bass anymore. With practice, you will be able to throw light lures with ease.
Once you can hit the precise areas with the baitcaster, you WILL catch more fish. Trust me.
Spinners for jigging for 'eyes and deeper water smallies.
D

What all the above have said - if you want distance, go with a Spinner. If you want accuracy, put in a lot of practice and go with a baitcaster.

Personally, I feel more comfortable with a spinner and use it most of the time. However, with heavy lures, in tight spots where accuracy is a necessity and I don't have to chug it with all my might to get to the spot, I will use the baitcaster.

I spincast and can hit anything, anytime. I use my baitcasting reels for trolling and off the dock. To me, use what you are good at and have fun.

Oh by the way, I use my finger to stop my line on my spincaster and I have seen a lot of people, just as good as I, use a baitcaster.
