What is wrong with spinning reels? I have about eight of them. I was watching Loud Mouth Bass this morning on ESPN II, and they showed a clip of a pro fisherman landing a monster with a spinning reel. They were laughing about the fact that this guy caught the fish on a spinning reel, and compared it to using a snoopy pole. Baitcasters have replaced spinning reels as the reel of choice. Why?

Anyone that would make a statement like that is an Idiot in my opinion. There is definatly a place for them. Lite line and lite baits is a good example. Skipping baits under docks and brush is another.

I agree that they do have a place, BUT you can use light line on a baitcaster. Im sure your not familiar with a Daiwa Presso or Pixy then. The presso is rated for 1-4lb line and can throw a 1/16 or smaller OZ bait. http://www.japantackle.com/Daiwa_reels/Daiwa_Presso_Bait.htm
I love My spinning gear for skippin under docks and trees, but prefer baitcasting. :D

Heycods, don't feel bad. Didn't Woo Daves win a Classic with the help of a spincaster? Slingshotting it under docks or something?

I bought a Shimano Stradic spinning reel last year that I use for flukes and Rapalas. Works well with stump jumpers and when swimming a grub too. I won't go fishing without it.

Watch a cold-weather BASS or FLW tourney where everybody's had to resort to 1/8oz jigs or dropshot rigs and you'll see that the spinning reel is alive and well. Every dog has his day.

spots

Re: Spinning Reels

I'll probably end up getting a baitcaster one of these days soon to satisfy my curiosity. Any excuse to buy another fishing pole.

Re: Spinning Reels

you can flip and pitch with baitcasters to just like spinning reels i have both but i like baitcasters.shamino makes a baitcaster that accepts light line.spinning reels suck in the wind cause wind blows the line all over.just a thought.

I dont understand this statement as you can cast ten times better with a spinning reel into the wind than you can a baitcaster.

Re: Spinning Reels

I have more problems with baitcasters in the wind than spinning reels.

Koolerb, you mean that you don't have a baitcaster?? Go. Now. Buy one and git out in the yard and start practicing for spring! You won't regret it.

Earlier, when I said that I took that spinning reel everytime that I went fishing... it's setting next to five baitcasters. If you think of your rods and reels like golf clubs, the spinning reel is like a sand wedge. It will perform better in certain situations than all of the other clubs but you wouldn't want to go 18 holes with it.

If you need a recommendation on a baitcaster, the Shimano Curado is an excellent choice for nearly all situations. They just came out with a new model so the older green Curado reels have dropped in price to around $99. Worth every cent!

spots is off his soapbox

Re: Spinning Reels

CN Spots - Thanks for the tip on the Curado, but I just ordered a Diawa on sale at Bass Pro Shops last night. Yesterday I got the bug, and went from “thinking about it”, to, “have to buy one right now”. I have an unusually virulent strain of the fishing bug this winter.

Re: Spinning Reels

Beats the flu. Diawa make some fine reels as well. What model did you buy? Put cheap line on until you get used to throwing it, if you're like everybody else they'll be a few bird's nests in your future. ;)

spots

Re: Spinning Reels

I got a Daiwa Advantage and a 6ft Ugly Stick. The reel was on sale for $60 at Bass Pro Shops. Seemed like a good price.
