Well here I go again with another dumb question. I was filling my boat, and I spilled about 3 cups of gas on the carpet, which worked its way down into the bottom of the boat. I turned on the pump and got most of it out but I still have the gas smell. The good news is my wife wont go out on the boat till I get the smell out, the bad news well come to think of it there is no bad news. Any ideas?

Bad news is where there is the odor of gas there is the possibility of an ignition of the gas fumes with the proper electrical spark!!

A dead fish in the boat for about a week should take care of that gas smell lol. Seriously, rinse the bilge out really good with some **** and span, if your on the water then something environmental would be appreciated, the odor of gas usually goes away after it evaporates.

Ironic that I had no idea I was saying a bad word until the edit made me stop and think about it.

People blow themselves up regularly using a shop vac on gas. Guaranteed bomb. You are lucky nothing happened to you. Never vac up any flamable liquid with a shop vac.

Leave it out in the sun uncovered and open and let it evaporate. It will go away eventually. Run a carpet cleaner over the carpet also.

Speaking of a dead fish in the bilge. I wonder how long Huron Angler's boat smelled? :D

Denatured Alcohol will get rid of the smell.
So will Seafoam, but that's kind of expensive to be dumping around.

It needs to be explained that the air a shop vac pulls through, goes through the series wound motor, sparking carbon brushes and all.

Man, oh man, you better go get a lottery ticket. You should have blown off an arm and burned down your boat.

We can turn this into another ethanol thread:
"Darn ethanol won't even explode a shop vac into a raging fireball because of phase separation !!";):D
