I am awaiting delivery of a Shimano Crestfire and I'm trying to decide what to spool it with. I think 12lb. Stren will work finem but I'm also considering the 12lb. Spiderwire Fusion. I have used it in my Zebco 33 and I like it. It feels a little gritty as it rubs the eyes on my rod, but I like how it doesn't stretch and the hook sets. Is this something I would want to put in my baitcaster?

Re: Spiderwire Fusion & Baitcaster

If you like zero stretch, I can recommend powerpro braid - I have 30lb on one of my baitcasters (BPS pro series). Same diameter as 6lb mono, zero stretch, zero memory, very hard to cut (if you usually use your teeth, forget about it), almost impossible to break. Great sensitivity. Fill the spool about half with mono to keep it from slipping around the spool, also because it's so expensive. But it doesn't wear out or get brittle with age & extreme temps like mono does. Lasts practically forever. Improved clinch knot won't hold, you have to use a palomar knot. I also use it on one spinning reel for unweighted plastics like flukes & wacky-rig senkos. Won't tangle just because you get a little twist in the line like mono does.

Re: Spiderwire Fusion & Baitcaster

I keep a pair of toenail clippers on a lanyard around my kneck or nearby. It doesn't cut the fusion as well as mono, but it does cut it. I just started using the clippers this season and I wonder how I got along without it.

Funny you mentioned the knot. I usually tie a palomar for all my hooks. The first time I used the fusion I tied one and it slipped off. I thought maybe I just messed up tying it and didn't catch my mistake. Rather than loose another fish just to find out, I started using the improved clinch not. I have had zero problems with this knot slipping with the fusion. I might try the palomar again though just because I can tie it quicker.

For the end to end knot (mono to braid) which knot do you use?

I usually use a double uni. But looking at it now, when I tried to do it from memory on a new spinning reel couple nights ago I got it wrong, but my variation seemed like it was going to hold. Hope so. I rarely get that much line off anyway (about 50 yards), only if I'm casting for schoolies with a heavy lure.

Is the spider wire not wearing grooves in your rod guides? That's a rumor I heard.

BTW, I blame my broken reel on the no-stretch line - I cast a lure in amoung some bushes in shallows & started reeling just as it hit the water. As luck would have it, it landed right on a branch and caught just as I started to crank - and shattered the pinion gear. I think mono would have absorbed the shock. It was a cheap reel anyway and I upgraded to a Mitchell Avocet. Put new 8-lb mono backing on it & added the line from the broken reel.

I have also heard about the line wearing grooves in rod guides. So far, mine show no evidence of wear. I can tell you though it doesn't feel very smooth when I reel in my Zebco 33. It almost gives me a grinding sensation though that may be too harsh of a word. I can't really tell if it's coming from the reel or the guides. I let my fishing buddy spool his open face spinning reel with the remainder of the rool I boought. We're going fishing Saturday and Sunday. I'll see if he experiences the same.

The stren line does not groove your guides, the spider wire will. The only guides that are immune to this ,are the titanium ones.
It becomes a real problem when you go back to regular mono filament because the damaged guides will rip your regular wire.

Be careful if you dont have a good rod with the braids. jtexas is absolutely right about destroying equipment. I snapped several rods and bent reel axles with hard hook sets with braids. They will cut all but the best guides too. My friend caught a big grouper and after the fight he had deep grooves in his guides on a very good rod. Then there is the problem of backlashing or the line digging into itself and hanging up especially with the really thin lines. Dont get me wrong, I use braids but only for certain situations on certain rods and usually in 30 pound test or more. I have tried almost all of them and personally I like spiderwire stealth, fireline and powerpro.
