I have a 2001 200hp Yamaha HPDI. The speedometer has stopped working. Before it stopped working the needle on the gauge worked sporadicaly, only registering up to about 10mph eventhough I was going 30mph. Then it quit totalley. The gauge on the boat is not a yamaha, it is a analog type with the boat manufacturers name on it(Sea Pro).
The same motor had been removed and replaced just recently for a hull problem. Could they have loosened something? Where is the speed pickup in the motor? Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you.

Re: speedometer

The speed pickup has nothing to do with the motor. There should be a pickup on the hull near to motor. Usualy plastic looks a bit like a knife.

They are a presure device and are not accurate. If it has stopped working the first place to look, would be to make sure that the hose from the gauge to the sender has not come appart.

If it pops off the back of the gauge you will have water being squirted at the back of all your gauges and electrics which probably won't help.

Not sure what your repair bill will be, but if you want accurate speed, I would suggest getting a handheld GPS unit(even a cheapie). GPS units are right on the money for measuring speed!

I have a new boat and my speedo behaves exactly as you described your's (before yours quit altogether). I don't even bother looking at my speedo anymore. The GPS is perfect for determining trolling speeds.

gonegatorfishing,
Many outboards, have speedo pick-ups, built in to the engine lower units as Ken34688 says his does. My 115HP Mercury has the same thing.

Re: speedometer

Ken, The pickup on your motor is probably the one you are using for your speedometer. Sometimes the hole gets plugged up causing the speedometer to stop working.
It is a small hole located on the very front of the foot. The hose that attaches to the motor can come loose causing this too.
