Speedometer Tube??

I have a 1979 50 HP Blue Band 4 cylinder (Ser. # 5445498) with the lower unit dropped for an impellar change. At the front of the lower unit there is a plastic hollow threaded cream colored nut, diameter 3/8 inch, hex head with a rubber 1/4 inch tube coming out of the top of that hollow nut that is about 28 inches long. It has a plastic connector after about the first 12 inches of rubber tube, that connects to 16 inches of more tubing. As the lower unit came off rather suddenly, this entire contraption was attached. I've been trying to research it and think I've seen something that looks like it called a Speedometer Tube. Would anyone know if that is what it is? If that is what it is, I have a speedo wheel on my fishfinder and think I won't need it. If you think I don't need it, does it still need to be screwed into the lower unit along with the rubber hose? If not, should I screw some sort of plug into that same hole and discard this plastic piece and its tubing? Thanks a lot for helping out.

Re: Speedometer Tube??

Hi,

If you do not need the speedo tube you can remove it and put a brass plug in it's place. They were a nice feature for the boat riggers. They did not have to drill holes in the transom to mount the pressure style pitot tube for your
speedometer.
