Yea the hose on the back of the speedo is just pushed on and you can pull it right off. In fact, after you get things working you might want to put a zip tie around the hose to help hold it on. Mine tended to come off until I did that (especially at high speed) and I wouldn't know it until water was dripping on my feet from the console.
I'm guessing you have an outboard. That is why you don't see a pilot on the back end of the boat for the other end of the speedo tube. On an outboard it is built into the motor. Look at the front end of the lower unit on the outboard for a very small hole..........its hard to see. You can take a small nail, or drill bit and usually unstop it.
