My old (89) 26 ft sea ray has an intermittent speedometer. I notice that I have a pitot sensor as well as a speedometer tube on the inboard outboard Just up from the skeg on my mercruiser bravo 1 outdrive. What is that tube for? I assuming the pitot sensor feeds the speedometer and occasionaly I find it kicked up. Thanks, Dave

Re: speedometer question

Speedos are notoriously inaccurate. Its not unusual for it to kickup usually from snagging seaweed or something. These things can also interfere with readings.A gps is much more accurate.

Re: speedometer question

Ayuh,... Your Speedo is hooked up to either the pitot in the drive, or the 1 on the hull, but not both...
Follow the tube to see which 1...

Re: speedometer question

Hate em. I've replaced the pitot on the transom more times than I can count (mostly because my dogs think they're tasty) and pulled new tubing to the guage. I've "excerised" the speedo with compressed air at about 3 psi and it still reads about 10 mph slow on GPS. Since Carver elected to epoxy the stupid guages into the dash, I've been hesitant to replace the old speedo. Thus I ignore it mostly and rely upon seat of the pants and the tach for speed readings. I'm not in much of a hurry so I know what 30 mph feels like. I know 40 mph makes the refrigerator door fall off in mild chop so I keep it in the middle. I'm usually shaking my head at my speedo readings.
