speedometer pitot

seems like everytime i go out on the lake something seems to clog up the speedo pitot, i always watch for stuff and make sure i dont hit anything, but somehow it always gets in there,, is there anything to help stop stuff from getting in there, and whats the best way to get it out,, so far ive just been using a drill bit and turning it by hand.

Do what the rest of us do. Ditch the Pitot-tube type speedo, which is notoriously inaccurate, and use GPS, which gives you accurate speed. Later, when you can afford it, remove the speedo gauge and install a Flo-Scan...

Is there any damage that can be done to anything by leaving the debris alone? My speedo just stopped working, and I TRIED to dig out the debris, and it still does not work. Until I get a compressor on the other end, I just planned on leaving it alone.
