Re: speedometer help

There are two types of sensors typically used on boats to measure speed. One is a pitot tub which measures water pressure impinging on a pickup. It is simply a plastic part with a hole in it connected to a tube which runs all the way up to the speedometer. No electricity is involved.

The second is a paddlewheel driven magnetic pickup which measures the frequency of the spinning paddlewheel. It uses wires.

Please confirm if there are any wires coming through the transom to the sensor. How many conductors does the wire have?

Also, can you get a model number from the back of the gauge?

Re: speedometer help

sorry i was 100% wrong on everything. That wire was for an old fish finder. The hose comming off of the speedometer connects to the outdrive(mercruiser). I took it off and lightly put the air hose to it and the guage jumped. Put it in water, and still no speed. I dont know, guess ill have to tear apart the outdrive. Any tips would help. thanks for everything

Re: speedometer help

If you look at the leading edge of the outdrive, you'll see a small hole (roughly 1/8" in diameter). Use a fine wire to unplug the hole. I have a Volvo Penta outdrive that uses a separate pitot tube. I'm not familiar with the pitot plumbing inside of a Merc outdrive.

Also, check the tube as it comes through the transom for pinch points when the drive is fully down.

where exactly are you seeing this on the outdrive? i had a marina replace my gimble bearing and when i got it back the speedometer does not work. is this something you have to dig into the outdrive or is it external?
