All,

Probably a simple problem but for a new boat owner...

The speedo is not working on my '97 Bayliner 2050LE with a 5.7Litre Mercruiser. I am struggling to find where the speed is read from (hull? leg?) to check for block/stuck device.

All input appreciated

There is a tiny hole in the front of the lower unit. When the boat is moving water pressure is sent from that hole through a small hose all the way up to your speedo. If you crawl under your dash and look at the back of the speedo you will see a small black tube. Pull it off of the instrument and blow into it. It should be clear so that you can easily blow air out of the hole in the lower unit. If not the line is kinked or blocked somewhere. A common problem is for some debris to get stuck in the hole in the lower unit. Also the hose can get pinched or broken. If it is not clear just follow it back through the boat, find and clear the blockage. If it is clear the speedo is done.

It should be noted that if the problem is found to be in the leg, such as a piece of debris hitting and closing the hole, sometimes it's easier just to srew a pitot on the back of the boat and use that.

Thanks for the information. I'll try the suggestion from mrmerc and hopefully that'll solve it.

Thanks for the tip DieselWalt. I will do this if, as you say, the problem is in the leg.

I'll give an update on success after the weekend.
