Well, I got my new boat out on thursday last, and the only thing that doesn't work is the speedometer. It doesn't register a thing! I know that the hole that it gets it's reading from is in front of the lower unit, right above the prop, but do I have to clean it out or something? Thanks in advance for any help.

It's an outboard 1995 Merc 100 Eltpo

First of all I'd like to point out, that on a new boat you have a warranty and as such should not work on the boat yourself.

Next, the speedo is driven by the pressure in front of your lower unit. If this pressure for some reason does not reach the instrument, it will show nothing.

Check the hose for leaks and bends. If you remove the hose from the lower unit you shoul be able to see water spray from it while running. If you carefully blow into the hose from the motor end, you should be able to make the pointer move (or detect a leak). Remember this hose is a direct line to the sea, so a leak will result in water inside the boat, somewhere.

Last, there is always a possibility that the instrument is not working.

Thanks for the relpy UU. The dealer had to put new guages in since it's not the original motor on the boat. I think I will try that and see if the guage is reading anything. Thanks!
