I can't seem to do anything with that number either. Is it particularly old? Is there any hope of a picture?
If it's the '60s era Speeditwin (Click here) then the model number should be on a plate between the two transom clamps, just up on top of the tilt/swivel bracket.
But we won't need a model number to precisely identify it if that's the outboard.

I am sorry for not mentioning how old I think it is. I believe it to be from the late 20s to early thirties. It looks like the picture in Hunn"s Old Outboard book on page 14 but it says speeditwin on the tank not fastwin.
I took a pic on my cell phone but didn't come out.

Wow..sorry to bring this thread back from the grave but I'm going to double check the serial # but this looks exactly like my motor which I've been thus far unable to identify!

This is my first boat/motor and I have LOTS's of questions if anyone here is familiar with this motor!

I'll let you know beforehand that YES it starts and runs! Miraculously! It's built like a tank! While I track down a serial can anyone tell me more? Firstly I'd really like to know if there's a release somewhere that allows me to tilt it up further for trailering.

I can see it in the pic, lever between the transom clamps.

That locks it while running, but i do not believe it locks it up for trailering. i think it is a friction lock. Best bet is a transom-saver. Rick

Again, pardon the newbness...friction lock? Does that mean I should be able to just tilt it up?Just seems like I can move it so far (as far as the trim will allow) and then thats it, it want's to lift right off the transom...

Release the lockdown lever, then simply pull it up. It should go up till the rubber bumper contacts the transom. What trim allows??? You got power trim of some sort on that motor? Whaddya mean, it wants to lift off the transom??? I certainly hope it is mounted more securely than that!!! Othewise, you are going to lose it the first turn you make.

It also unlocks it to tilt the motor.

Yes, I believe you are correct, but I am not sure it locks it in a tilted position. I believe that is a friction adjustment on the motor. I may be wrong but that is how it works on my '56 15HP. Rick

Re: speeditwin

Does it not have a pin to lock it in place on the side of the clamp? Thinks that's how they work.

NP, it actually works, buddy next door has the same year 40 but i'm sure a transom saver would work wonders for him.

You guys are absolutely amazing! Thanks so much..I'm gonna try that this aft! If it warms up I might take it out a bit to get a little more comfortable with it. I'll let you all know!

No, just out on the Gananoque River. I'm not quite comfortable enough nor do I trust the boat enough to go very far just yet. Only baby steps I figure until i build up some confidence in her. That way it's fairly easy to just float home while I hang my head in shame !

If everything is spot on with your motor you'll be the one towing people home, very reliable motors.

Thanks again to all!
