For the guys who want to put a waterpump is a 9.8 Mercury 1978-85. The lower unit drop with 2 nuts. Nothing else needs disconnecting. slide the rubber ring off the drive, take the 2 nuts from the pump cover, slide the cover off, take out the broken impellor and the broken rubber parts make sure you keep the little key way .
It takes 5 minutes to take it apart, and a lot longer to put it back together. You have a water tube (take that off the lower unit right away), motor drive shaft and a forward/reverse drive. The keyway has to be put on the flat part of the shaft, the impeller is slid down the shaft and the rubber ends have to be bent away from the shaft when turning the shaft clockwise before the impellor will fit in the pump housing and at the same time the nick in the impellor housing has lined up with the keyway. Then you put the metal tab plate on with the bent tab fitting into the pump housing. Then your rubber ring gasket goes on between the metal tab plate and the top cover put the two nuts on. I,m not sure how tight, I tighten mine down tight so it would not come loose. Shine a flashlight up the hollow and locate the hole for the water tube, insert watertube, hold the water tube up with something long that will fit inside the watertube while shoving the lower unit up until the end of the water tube slides into the plastic tube in the lower unit and the other 2 shafts fit in the holes in the front of the housing. With all three lined up -push up and if you have an inch of space, pull slightly on your pull chord and the drive shaft should slip in allow the lower unit to close up the gap. Put the 2 nuts on and tighten. By the way, if you start out with your shifter in neutral, the prop has to be in nutral. Moving the prop a little bit will put the shaft in gear when the lower unit is out of the engine, you have to turn the shift shaft on the lower unit to make sure the prop turns without the drive shaft turning.
Have fun
The end
