I pulled my sound system when I got rid of my "old" car, and now have inherited my wife's 02 Impala. In doing some research, one thing I see is that I need a $100 adapter to maintain warning chimes function because they play thru the speakers.

I'm working on a budget & I wonder if there are any other pitfalls? Up to now I've dealt with simple straightforward installations, but really don't like the OEM sound. I really appreciate the aftermarket stuff on my 170 mile trips to the lake!

I guess all 00-05 Impalas would relate to this too.

IDK that MANY functions are controlled via the radio and I would surrender and leave it be if it was mine.

most chevys do the same thing...There are a couple adapters that do different things...one plays the chimes through the amp to the front speakers and one provides a couple outputs you can mount cheap speakers under the dash and retain the factory chimes...On my silverado it didnt have onstar or anything so all that played was the annoying key is in the ignition and door is open sound...So I did away with the extra speakers and haven't noticed anything missing...There are a bunch of ways to do it...I wouldn't expect anything else to be a problem unless you have steering wheel controls you want to integrate into the radio...There is a way to do it with most remote control decks but you need an adapter with a RF signal generator specific to your car and its a couple hundred dollars...

I discovered that there is a T-adapter that lets you mount the original radio in the trunk to maintain all OEM computer functions and plug an aftermarket system into that. Chimes, delayed accessory power, change oil warning reset etc etc. Should be pretty straightforward after that.

Excellent info!

I also know that there is/was a FACTORY amplifier that mounts under the rear parcel shelf, in the trunk. My 2000 had one, my 2001, 2003, and 2004s did not.

This is a 2002 and doesn't have it. The stock system sounds better than some I've had, but pretty lame campared to components. Here's the adapter:

That's a pretty decent price too.
