The hardest part I find about removing my lower unit gearcase on my Johnson 55hp (1979) is removing those damn snaprings.

It requires special part 311878 which is very hard to get in Sweden and costs 150 dollars which is just not necessary for a 10-20 dollar pair of snap ring pliers.

I managed to get them off customising another pair of snap ring pliers by metal sawing the the tips, but those recently gave in. Anyone know what measurements or a tip on which model/make of pliers would be a good alternative?

Thanks. I used to do it that way but find eventually the nipple parts snap off.

Ive ordered one which im hoping could be a fit, otherwise ita back to making a custom one again.

Some time ago ( while working a car gear box) I bought a 5 piece set by Draper tools
Will do internal and external circlips ( or snap rings as you call them ) with two sizes of tips and both straight and angled . Overkill at the time but comes in handy from time to time

Now about £12 from Amazon

Nice. Will this fit older Johnson outboards? What have you tested it on?

I am glad I have 2 of the big factory recommended circlip pliers and the extensions for early hydro-electric units.--------At $150+ each for these ( W7 ? ) units it is satisfying to have the right tools.
