Quick question for you guys.

Changed the sparkplugs today on my 1995 3.0 L merc.

I am not an increibly mechanical person, so please forgive this question if the answer is obvious.

Old plugs were black on the end (never changed them in the three years I owned the boat). Smelled of gas (obviously) but two were also covered with a brown liquid.

Is this oil? If so, is this bad?

Re: sparkplug question

Brown Liquid sounds like rust.....Could be the first stage of riser/manifold failure.
If the manifolds are original, they would be suspect to me. Could also be the riser gaskets starting to leak.
Of course, I can't see the brown liquid, so can't really be sure what it is.
Pull the risers and check the surfaces.

baylinerbuddy,
Maybe I can help. Long ago, in a previous post, Don inadvertantly posted the first pic, for a center riser manifold, when yours is actually like the second pic. He was called on the carpet for it and repremanded severly. The proof readers are tough here, I'm just glad there more forgiving on speling n grammur. :)

Re: sparkplug question

they think the brown stuff could be rust which means u could have water entering your cylinders via a rusted out manifold..

but then again it could be nothing of the kind.. but they dont think it could be oil..

me.. i dont think anything on such limitted information..

trog100

Hay-
Is this one of those guess what's different on these two pictures game? Just Kidding.

baylinerbuddy, did you have the motor winterized? And has it been run since last season? If so could the liquid could be remnants of the motor fogging?

Don s, any chance of that?

Re: sparkplug question

There is a chance of anything.....

The statement "Brown Liquid" allows lots of possibilities.

Re: sparkplug question

baylinerbuddy.. i dont think u can tell much from looking at the sparkplugs after so little running..

give the boat a proper run keep an eye on your engine oil for water contamination and any signs of leaking manifolds and see what happens..

trog100
