sparking batteries

Is it normal for the trolling motor terminals to spark when touched to the battery while putting them on or taking them off? The trolling motor is plugged in (but not turned on). His batteries seem to die fast and we were told that he may have a short in the trolling motor.

When the trolling motor is disconnected at the bow, no sparks happen when the terminals are disconnected or connected.

Thanks!

Bob

Re: sparking batteries

Spark means current is flowing - and not a trivial amount.

Don't have experience with trolling motors but I would guess you should take a good look at the controller circuits and switches.

Re: sparking batteries

Can you put an ammeter in series with the motor when it's hooked up to the batteries? If the motor is off, you should read 0 amps. If you read a current flow, you know something is wrong. Also, watch the meter while revving up the motor, the current draw should track RPM.

Re: sparking batteries

hello
be aware that depending on the trolling motor there may always be current draw. diodes and such actually leak. test the current draw. 800 milliamps will cause a visible spark.
my trolling moptor has a constant draw but it also has a tag that says unplug it when not in use.
so you may or may not have a problem. do the ammeter test and email the manufacture.

Re: sparking batteries

Yes, absolutely normal with either a big or small current flow. As a reminder, connect the [+] terminal first, then the [-] terminal. When disconnecting from the battery, remove the [-] first and the [+] last.
