Frustration has set in on this 20 HP Merc. Tested the spark today and looks really weak but it still there. Where is the spark that looks like a taser going off? Does anyone know how much spark is good enough or how to improve the spark or better yet what causes weak spark? Its a 1972 20 HP with points, coils, and condenser. Please help me. http://forums.iboats.com/images/smilies/grumpy.png

If it has points condenser and coils it is not a 72 it's a 69 or older, check the coil heel gap and the flywheel magnets for rust if they are OK it's probably the condensers take them to a marina or small engine shop and have them tested.

I am sure you are very knowledgable when it comes to makes and models but everything I have researched says it is a 1972 Ser#3232778 with a Phase maker ignition part number 336-4516 but it only has one condenser. Thanks for your advise and I will look into it. Anybody else have a solution for weak spark?

This is why serial number beat descriptions evertime, as I misunderstood your description SORRY!
Your serial number is a 1972 it does have the ign. system that has points and a single condenser, here's a test for the system.
