Spark retard Advance

I have done all I can do to get my 57 Johnson 10 hp running (coils, point, plugs, wires, timing, new plugs, carb rebuild). I am looking at this magneto plate that turns when I turn the throttle. There is a gear at the end the end of the throttle that meshes with a vertical rod that moves an armature that moves the magneto plate. There is slop in the gears. The needle doesn't always point to the word on the throttle it should. I think the spark is at times too advanced or delayed to get this to fire. I do not know how to adjust. Can someone walk me thru this?

Thanks
Frank

The words on that throttle plate are never true. Ignore them. Turn it this way for "fast" and the other way for "slow" With the shift in neutral, turn it as far toward "fast" as it will go. That is the "start" position. That's really all you need to know.

Re: Spark retard Advance

On the handle the "start " position is pretty far removed from as fast as it will go. This may be my problem. I will try it that way.

This has always been what frustrates me about small engines. The engineering is rudimentry and the tolerances not very tight. However, heaven forfend you don't get it just right, because then it wont run at all. It reminds me of my 1950 TO-20 tractor (God rest her soul).

Thanks

That's why I like my qd-12, never any slack with the non-tiller outboards.

EDIT- stupid thought, have you tried switching the plug wires around????

Re: Spark retard Advance

I have a 98 115 hp Johnson that purrs like a kitten. It is on a Stratos Fish and Ski and is a nice boat for a guy who fishes and has kids.

Compressionis 80 psi in both cylinders which strikes me as a little low, though it is a pull start.

I tried the plug inversion.

A buddy of mine has an older father-in- law who knows these motors and used to build race motors and I am hoping he can look it over for me. I am sure it is some minor problem that I am not smart enough to see.

I appreciate everyone's advice on this little problem of mine.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Good boating,
Frank
