Champion L76V or L78V was the original surface gap plug for 70's Mercs. Merc went to NGK plugs in the 80s or so, replacing the Champions.

If memory serves me, L76V was replaced by BUHW and L78V was replaced by BUHW-2. I am surprised you cannot find them.

I would think the L78V or L76V would work. The difference between the L76V and L78V is the projection of the electrode and the size of the "ring" on the spark plug end. L78V electrode projects a bit more and the ring is a bit thicker, again, if memory serves.

Chrs1956. Thank you for your reply. The ngk buhw-2 is discontinued but just a while ago I found a merc dealer not to far away that had some….mine is a 3 cyl so I bought 6! I am new to this engine so I bought a fuel filter and fuel line primer bulb and hose. Ordered impeller kit too. I guess this 90elpto does not have an air filter.

No air filter on OBs. those plugs will last a real long time. I replace them when the shells rust, although the business end of the spark plugs would last for decades. I will be shocked if they are d/c w/o a replacement, as they were std for millions of motors.
