i have a 1976 135hp evinrude motor, when i bought the boat it has autolite plugs 2634 and it runs fair with them, but my question is my book shows ul77v champion plugs with no cross reference to the autolite 2634 so which plug should i use??? my book shows the cross reference should be autolite 2892? thanks for any help

Re: spark plugs???

I would use what the book tells you. The autolites (which are crap plugs in my opinion) may not even be the right ones unless you can find out what the cross reference is.

Re: spark plugs???

Their website says 2852. I've heard of people recommending NGK. I was working on my carbs this weekend and a old timer mechanic says he only runs platinum bosch plugs in his boat.

Re: spark plugs???

Personally I like the NGK too. Just an all around good plug.

A plug is a plug as far as I see it. The only reason manufacturers use certain plugs is because that's who they have a contract with. Very rarely will you see a plug that only works good in certain engines.

Re: spark plugs???

Champions are recommended and I would use nothing else. Made a mistake over 30 years ago by using the "equivalent" NGK's in a motorcycle. Found it was a bad mistake !!

Re: spark plugs???

Don't run the boat with one cylinder down. If getting no fuel it will burn something out. Bearings/rings

Pull and clean the carbs and try again.

I just changed from NGK to champion ql77jc4 & love them :D
For as the carbs just get the correct kits & be carefull to put them back exactly as you took them off & apart - One of those "If i can do it things" ;)

Re: spark plugs???

well i got my manual in and i stand corrected(told you i am a noob) but in my post i said it was my #4 cylinder that wasnt getting the fuel but in fact it is my #3 cylinder not getting fuel.....so do you think it is still a carb problem and if so which carb{ top or bottom} feeds fuel to the #1 and #3 cylinders i only got 1 carb kit and was going to try to clean 1 of the carbs im trying to read up in my manual but it will take some time ,what do you guys think?

Re: spark plugs???

Each carburetor has two throats and two sets of high speed jets plus two sets of idle jets. Each side of the carburetor serves one cylinder.

The carburetor kit services one carburetor, so you need two kits to do both carburetors.

Cylinders three and four are both served by the lower carburetor.

The current BRP listing for the spark plug is the Champion L77V surface gap. The listed plug for sustained slow speed operation is L77J.

Re: spark plugs???

When a spark plug continues to look new, either that cylinder is not pulling fuel, not firing, or water is entering the cylinder and steam cleaning the plug.

Inspect your reeds, do a spark test and check compression.
