Hi I have a 1955 5.5 hp johnson would it be ok to put champion L77JC4 spark plugs in it . I know the right spark plug is J6C but all wal-mart had were J8C which I heard runs the motor to hot and i figured that this plug wouldn't hurt because it says JC4 in it and i fgured that would run it cooler correct me if i'm wrong and tell me if it is alright to put this plug in my engine

I don't know the answer to your question, but try a good auto parts store. If they don't have them, they can get them. Sometimes Wal-Mart uses the stock number designation which is 823 for J6C. I would use what's recommended.

Do NOT use the L77JC4 plugs in your 5.5! Those plugs have 1/2 long threads on them that will protrude into the combustion chamber, and may even hit the pistons.

The J6 plugs, and all the " J " series have 3/8" thread length which is what the motor requires.

You can use J4C or J4J plugs and they may foul just a bit quicker if you do a lot of low speed running. J8 plugs will work, especially if you are going to do a lot of low speed running.

Thanks I was about to change them but before i did i compared the old ones to the new ones and noticed that the new ones were bigger. I'm glad i didn't put them in that would probably be sad ending of my motor and stupid mistake thanks alot Dan.
