spark plugs?

i have a question maybe someone can help me out with...I have a merc 150 hp, 1985 model.......i pulled the cheap autolite plugs that were in it and took them to get cross refrenced for some ngk's... the people at the parts store told me that the -plugs i was running were rated for a 65 hp mercury, so..my question is what effects can running a plug not rated for a specific motor have on the engine, i don't know how long the plugs were in there because i had just recently purchased the boat, i had to have the motor rebuilt due to a burnt piston...i was thinking the plugs may be the reason the piston burnt... thanks alot for the help..

do they make Bosch platinum plugs for 40 hp merc OB's? if so where could i get them? my engine is a 1987 40 hp. if they dont what would be a good plug for this engine ?

boatrookie,just a couple of things, you will get a better responce if you satart a new thread rather than tack on someone elses they just get lost in the shuffle. If your engins is a 87 it's a 45 and not a 40 mercury didn't make a 40 that year. if it is a 45 then the plug id s NGK-BUHW-2 there is no platinun plugs made for it, if your having plug trouble, the problem is ign or carberation
