Hi People,
I am looking at spark plugs for my 5.3 Chevy and was wondering if anyone has used Platinum or a Silver Center Electrode plug, if so does it really give you better gas mileage and more horse power. Thank David

Re: Spark Plugs

5300 Chev engines come standard with a platinum plug. Just use the recommended replacement Plat plug. That is how all the car manufacturers are getting away with 100,000 mile plug changes (which actually last till 50-60K.

Re: Spark Plugs

I have always used platinum. Can't say they improve performance, but the main advantage they have is the gap is maintained. They also are less prone to deposits (not that there is a lot on a modern engine anyway). What I am wondering about are those iridium plugs. I have not talked with anyone who knows anything about them beyond the fact that they cost a fortune.

Re: Spark Plugs

In an otherwise unmodified modern engine I would only use the same plug it came from the factory with when replacing them. I put platinum bosch plugs in my VR6 jetta once and it ran horrible, missed badly at the slightest acceleration. Factory spec plugs and it runs sweet again.

If those plugs gave better gas mileage and performance they would come with the car new. That's just hype marketing.

Ditto on what all are saying. I used the Bosch in my 96 Taures. Only got 45,000 miles out of them. Went back to what Ford reccomends.

If anyone has changed plugs on a 3.0 DOCH front 3 are a breeze, Back 3 about 3 hours.
