While I was troubleshooting other issues with my motor, 86 Mariner 50 hp 3 cyl. I changed out the plugs. The previous owner was running NGK BUHW-2, the manual calls out BUHW. After changing to the correct plug, the engine now takes forever to turn over. Never had the problem with the -2 plugs. What is the difference between the 2 plugs?

Re: Spark Plugs

Can someone tell me the difference between the NGK BUHW and BUHW-2 spark plug? Thanks

I believe the dash two plugs come pre gapped at 2mm.

Re: Spark Plugs

I have a Clymer manual, and it says use BUHW on motors equipped with high energy ignition coils. May be your problem if you don't have high energy coils.

My manual only goes back to 1990, but it says to use BU8H on 50hp, which is a surface gap plug..

Jerry

Re: Spark Plugs

Thanks for the replies. I got hold of an owners manual, and it calls out for the BUHW on the 50/60 hp motors, and the -2 plug on the 45hp. The engine started alot quicker with the -2 plugs in it. I was wondering what the difference was in the plugs. They are both the gap-less type.

Re: Spark Plugs

The BUHW is a colder plug than the BUHW-2.

Re: Spark Plugs

Thanks to all. I keep running the -2 plug it seems to run better. Now I can get back to the Tachometer and Prop issues.
