spark plug

I have a 1973 evinrude 6hp and I was wondering if anyone knows the correct spark plug? I was looking on diffrent plug charts and im not sure of the right one. the one that is in there now is a champion ql77jc4 im not sure if this is the right one. will it make a diffrence if it isnt the right one?

If you can find them, J6J, the alternate is J6C or hotter plug J8C, ql77jc4 was for the newer electronic ignition motors 1977+.

Champion's site calls for the J8C's.

Quite possible, swap them out for the right plugs and retest.

The Champion sitte is waaaay wrong.

J8C is too hot.

J6C is okay, but J4C is better.

stay away from that champion site it gives several wrong applications as jb has pointed out.heres from my manual.1973-1976,j6c,gapped at .030.

Evinrude site pointed out J6J which are J6C , obvious discrepency, gotta love accuracy on Champions part.

what is the correct adjustment setting for the low speed idle needle? does that also adjust the rich/lean mix?

Lightly seat the needle and back it out 1 1/2 turns then replace your knob in the center point. Stay away from J4C's They aren't worth anything but fishing weights. A small motor like that will only get about half throttle with them. I had an old 5 1/2 that wouldn't wind up the way it should. I went home and found some old J6J's and put them in and wow....what a difference.

From what I have seen, the only difference between the J6J and the J6C, is the length of the ceramic part. The J6C's are longer.

Just don't know why they feel the need to changed the damned part numbers.:mad:
