spark plug wires

could i just go to my automotive store and pick up plug wires for my 1988 454 merc with thunderbolt?

While there is no safety reason not to, most auto wires sets will not be long enough. You can make your own from a custom set.

It will be a challenge to find a completed wire set with both ends already attached that are designed to "fit" your length, cap, spark plugs and the area down under/next to the exhaust manifolds without touching. It's been done, but not easily. Most will buy a set they have to crimp the ends on. The coil tower boot can be difficult to get a tight fit that will not leak spark. Even aftermarket wires can be a pain to deal with at times. See the review under the sierra wires.

Awesome, thanks guys I'm new to this.. Where in Ontario as in the Hamilton area can I get these wires without waiting 2-3 days?

Your local Mercruiser dealer should have them, or be able to get them in a day or two.
