im wanting to replace the spark plugs on a 1971 mercury 650. I was wondering do i have to use the marine (expensive ones) or can I just go to an auto parts store, buy a kit, and cut them myself????

boatyboat

You'd be best served by buying marine ones. They screw into the distributor cap. They don't just push in like a car.

Well, I've got 87 90HP Merc that I've used automotive plug wires on and never had a problem. The parts were only a few bucks at the Napa store. My marine dealer wanted around 20 bucks for a factory set.
Good Luck

By the way, if you decide to use the automobile trpe or marine, Be sure to purchase a tube of electrical grease. This grease will prevent corrosion at the terminals and help waterproof the connections.
:)
