Spark plug operation

Someone today was trying to tell me that those plugs that are non-adjustable, i.e. with the central dot tuple electrode and no bendy bit, operated by sparking to the piston. I told him no way, that they spark to the outside edge of the plug and that if what he said was true it'd burn a hole in the piston. I am right, right?

Re: Spark plug operation

The discharge will travel to the closest ground point, the body of the spark plug.

It is common in outboard motors to have flat plugs, in other words, no protruding ground (earth) electrode. They are called 'surface discharge'. What motor are we talking about?
