I have a 1992 40hp Johnson 2stroke ( vj40tlenj ) model outboard. Getting ready to replace plugs and wires. Does any one know the gap for this engine. When I pulled the old plugs one was at .65 and one was at .56. Would very much like to know proper gap. Thanks

Those plugs had been in there for a while.-----If you set the new ones at 0.035" it will be a happy motor.

The recommended plugs are Champion QL78YC gapped at 0.030"

ITYWF it would originally have been fitted with QL78C plugs

At one time 0.040" was the gap for pretty much all Johnsons and Evinrudes but it was changed across the board sometime in late 1980s I think. Various reasons are suggested for the change including reduced wear and reduced RFI.
