I have had an issue with my 1996 Johnson 50HP, had been smoking, running rough under 2000RPM, smoothed out over that, could only get 4500 RPM tops etc. Cleaned the carbs, new plugs etc. no resolve..... Anyway I have isolated my problem....NO Spark on my top cylinder! Being that the "power pack" is under the fly wheel I am hoping that is not the problem, I would assume that if the power pack failed, neither cylinder would fire. From experience would you most likely say that this is a Ignition Coil issue? I am heading back to the boat tomorrow with the OHM meter, to test it but I was hoping to get some input tonight. Thanks. P.S. the motor is pushing a 22FT pontoon.

I don't know about yours, but I've looked at powerpak schematics and it seems they have discrete circuits for each cylinder. That being the case, yes, it can fail for one cylinder but not another. I also had that happen. However, it sounds to me like you're on the right trail checking the coils. Also, visually check the sparkplug wires for obvious faults.

No way your power pack is under your flywheel. And power packs can do all sorts of crazy things. that being said, it could still be a coil: ignition, charge or sensor, couldn't it? ....

OffShore, According to the manual, on the 1996 50hp Johnsons the Powerpack is in fact under the fly wheel. Thanks for the posts I will check the coil and get back with results

Mate, sorry, but no way. You must be thinking of the power coil, which sends voltage to the power pack to operate SLOW and Quickstart..

BTW, switch ignition coils, just to see if the problem follows the coil.

Remember to properly check your ignition system you must use a DVA meter, some things to check, look at the flywheel for cracks or wear, flywheel key, coil, stator, timer base, power pack.
