Hey guys, going on vacation in a couple of weeks. Grand kids would be real disappointed if the boat broke. Thinking about getting a spare prop for 1999 Johnson 70 hp. Don't know much about props. Anything you can add to my education will be appreciated.

Re: Spare Prop

I've just been reading about 4 blade composite props vs. 3 blade aluminum. Check out this website: www.comprop.com Lots of good general prop information there too.

Anybody had any experience with composite 4 blade props?

Re: Spare Prop

The only experience I have had with comp props on larger engines has been negative. They are slower and flex more than aluminum. On my small 4 hp Evinrude is does well.

You can usually find your prop size on your existing prop on the inside or the outside of the hub. Or just bring your old prop along when you go prop shopping.

Re: Spare Prop

Composite is good for a spare because it's cheaper...they do provide some performance in certain situations, however, they do break much more easily than one might think.
For just a spare, I couldn't say no, but "if" you need that second prop to perform as expected from the original, go with the same type/pitch you have, if it falls into the max recommended RPM range.

Re: Spare Prop

I had a trihull with a 60 Evinrude. Tried one. I liked it. Hit some rocks. Threw it away. Gearcase is fine (slow-no-wake). Sold the boat to my father-in-law. Nice rebuilt aluminum on it. First time out, found some rocks and messed up one blade pretty good. Gearcase is fine (slow-no-wake). Boat's still on the trailer...without a prop. Carbs are probably varnished by now.

But I digress. I liked it. I had good hole shot and good top speed. It's like the flex acts like a lower gear out of the hole. Sliced through the water real nice. But it took only one rock pile to trash it. The aluminum can be rebuilt. As a spare? You Bet! Pretty sure mine was a 17 pitch.

You may be able to find a used or rebuilt aluminum prop at a local prop shop and save a few bucks.

Yes, if you're happy with the prop you have, simply look for a spare with same specs.

If you're after some sort of change in performance or behaviour, now is the time to do the homework and get a different prop.

Your current prop has some numbers stamped into it. This tells the pitch etc. so you'll know what to look for.

Re: Spare Prop

Thanks for the posts! Here's where I stand.
1) Composites are out.
2) The prop I have now works well. 14X19 aluminum.
3) Tomorrow I will check locally, Dallas area, for same prop. But first, I will give it a run and make sure its giving around 5500 rpm @ wot.

Where's the best place to shop for props online?

You guys are a big help. Thanks again!

Re: Spare Prop

Wally, I looked here on iboats first, but they don't seem to have a 14X19 aluminum for 1999 J70. That may be an odd size or something.
