DHPMARINE mentioned in another thread that Mercury (the auto manufacturer) now has a Mariner model. I was wondering what other cars have been made with nautical names. The only one I can think of offhand is the Barracuda. Any others???

American Motors once offered a sled called the "Marlin." It was quite ugly. I believe that "Corvette" is a nautical term also. Seems like someone titled one "Commodore" but I don't recall whether it was AMC or Chrysler...that one could just be faulty memory on my part. There are probably a bunch more.

-dd-

It was not Renault Dolphin,it was Renault Dauphin.
Citroen had two cars that had fishy nick names. One was (translated from french)"the ugly duckling". The other was the official french government limo. It's nick name was "the Pike"
The corvet was, I believe, one class above destroyer, but some naval people probably know better

What is Intrepid? Somehow related to naval activities. Was it a Aircraft Carrier?

The corvette was a class of ships two down from the destroyer in the Royal Navy, the in-between class being the frigate, during WWII. They were simpler and quicker to produce and used less manpower. They needed a lot of escort vessels in a hurry to combat the U-boats.

An excellent novel is "The Cruel Sea", by Nicholas Montserrat, who served and commanded Corvettes during WWII.

FWIW,

Jinx
