I know you do not like being called out by name but you are the most informed about old Volvo's.
As you know I just bought a Volvo 280 T transom shield and I have a couple questions that I trust you can answer.
First, what is this?
shield1.jpg
It looks like some sort pivot arm for the steering to me but I am not sure.
I also do not see a trim sender at all. Would it be something that would have bolted in place of something else (like where the tilt would go)?
Last do you have some sort of diagram for the hydraulics. Or is it as simple as putting a splitter from each line from the pump and then running it to each cylinder?

Yes that is the steering arm. I took your picture and added a red line between the ball joint on the link arm that goes to one of those lower 3 holes. The steering cable system usually had the cable attached with a ball joint attachment to the transom, then attached to one of the upper holes.
I have looked for manuals for the 280PT setup, and we don't have any. Like I said earlier, I have only seen a couple, and none had anything to do with the trim. As far as I know, there is no trim sender to operate a gauge. It all has to be done by sound and feel.
That is one of the reasons I mentioned going to the 290 setup months ago.
I'm not saying I can't help, but things like how the hydraulics work and what is actually on the shield (both sides) for trim and such is going to be a visual/play it by ear thing unless someone finds some real info on it.
Also, that link I have the red line to (right side of the picture) is NLA (No Longer Available) for parts unless you find a supplier that happens to have them.

It for steering. I do not think I am going to need it then. My steering is very different. It comes in a on the other side and is attached to the transom at one end and to the arm on the other. No need for all the extra pc's.
Thanks for you help. I will see what I can come up with first before i bother you again.
Mark

Mark, re the trim sender, my 270T has a genuine volvo sender unit for the genuine volvo penta trim gauge, based on that I think its a safe bet that the 280T was originally designed with provision for a gauge, makes no sense that volvo would fit trim and than just hope somebody had a good feel for what’s going on back there! If your interested than email me at paulie0735@yahoo.co.uk and I'll get you some pics. It’s a simple devise, has a stainless cable connected to the lower unit that runs up inside the boat and connects to a spring-loaded electrical sender unit, from there its just a wire to the gauge, it works much like a fuel tank sender unit.
