Somthing wrong behind my prop??

Hey guys/girls

I purchased a new prop that just arrived today. I removed old one and noticed a bolt was missing and there is some unknown metal bracket or somthing that isnt current attached to anything. I have attached the photos so you can see yourself... but i cant seem to make sence of it.
Where could the bolt have gone??? there is no room for it to dissapear from behind, and the prop is on this end, so no escape? Shaft still feels solid, like no free movement. This is from a 5.7ltr volvo penta cobra sx sterndrive... i beleive 1997 model. Old prop was aluminium, new one is SS. Also what does that bolt hold into?? I had a look at the spot for it, i can see right through to other end, it doesnt seem to hold down anything?? is it just a balancing thing or am i missing the bigger picture?

That looks like what is worn out sacraficial anode behind your thrust washer. My 2008 Penta SX drive doesn't have that particular anode. Mine is mounted on top of the exhaust outlet/anti-cav plate. If you remove it be careful that the screw you pull out is not the lower unit oil drain.

So its not in the way?? Does it affect performance between water and the prop? How about the missing bolt? Should i replace it? whats its purpose.

It looks like (what's left of) an anode to me, though I've never worked on a VP. It's there to prevent corrosion of the drive, the anode corrodes away instead of your drive. I'd replace it the anode along with the missing bolt.

Re: Somthing wrong behind my prop??

Ahh i have another issue with my new prop that finally arrived from the states after a month :S I have attached photos once again to help describe my problem.
After you place all the parts, there is not enough room for the final washer (with the teeth) to slide onto and grip the spline. Also is there meant to be a gap between the drive sleeve and thrust washer? I currently have atleast a 5mm gap between the drive sleeve and the thrust washer and am not sure if this is normal. Im thinking maybe the prop is slightly too long? if i had another 5mm, i would be able to get the washer on at the front(one with the teeth to grip spline). This new prop uses a Quicksilver Flo-TORQ HUB Assembl kit.
The new prop is a 15 X 17P SS 4 blade PowerTech ELE4R17MS275

Help :S

Re: Somthing wrong behind my prop??

Note: i re-evaluated situation and it seems my thrust washer just isnt sitting back far enough on the shaft. Compared to where the old thust washer (from previouse prop) sat to the new one, there is approx 5-7mm. If i can get this thrust washer back another 5-7mm, everything will work out. Is it common to have thurst washer machined???

I had the same issue when I put my new prop on my johnson. I just re-used my old thrust washer, and everything was fine then.

Exactly....Try with the old thrust washer and see if the prop slides back enough.

Re: Somthing wrong behind my prop??

Yea that was the first thing i tried, and it doesnt fit into the new prop. All good though, i will just get it machined soon as everyone returns from christmas break.
Do you guys think i need to get some kind of spacer between the drive sleeve (hard plastic that goes inside the prop) and the thrust washer? In my photo above i showed how deep the drive sleeve sits, its approx 10-11mm from the top of the prop, and the lip on the thrust washer that also fits into the prop, is only 5mm deep. So that leaves me with approx 5mm empty space. Will the sleeve slide back n forth once pressure is applied in the water?? Will it cause any extra stress on the sleeve/drive sleeve adapter??

Re: Somthing wrong behind my prop??

I have always used the props with pressed in hubs.
Someone should answer that uses that type hub.

I had the same problem on a boat that i changed the lower unit on.
The prop shaft had a slightly different taper to it.

I stopped at a local boat shop and we tried several different thrust washers and found one that fit perfect.

Re: Somthing wrong behind my prop??

Thanks for the advice Gary. Yea my current prop is the original volvo one which is pressed in. Parts etc down here in australia are hard to get and cost 3 times what they do in the US :S Hence why i purchased this prop from you guys, even with the $100 shipping, you still save 300-400 on the prop :S
Closest prop shop to me is hour drive one way, so machining the thrust washer locally would probably be the easiest option.
Thanks once again cheif :)

ya if that was my boat i would be looking for a new bolt you don't want to go with out one. IF it so happens that you loose another one under way you dead in the water or you will loose your gears just a sugestion pay the $5 to get a new bolt and put it in before going out on the water again.

Thanks smallboatlover

i have looked at that bolt hole 5 times already, i really cant tell what that bolt would hold down :S maybe holds another sacraficial anode, who knows, but i can put my finger on opposite side and its only one peice, nothing else attached to it :S

Re: Somthing wrong behind my prop??

Before you go machining that thrust washer be sure the flo torque hub is seated all the way into the prop. And if you do decide to change it make sure it can't push in against the drive, that would be really ugly!
Maybe the old thrust washer was loose or somehow caused a lip on the shaft, you might be able to clean up the shaft to get the nice tight new washer on there.
Good luck. Someone who knows more than me will certainly chime in!
