Hey everyone, I've recently gotten into the pleasure boat scene (spent nearly my whole life on boats but strictly for fishing).. Anyhow, I'm really wanting to find somewhere to take the family where we could have fun cruising, but mainly have spots on the bank/beach where we could dock/beach the boat and have restaurants right on the water.. hopefully I'm making sense.. we live in the northern tip of WV, 5min. From East Liverpool oh, and 40min from Pittsburgh.. We do mostly all of our boating on the Ohio, which is fun, but there's just no where to pull up and get a bite to eat or say grab a drink and relax on a deck etc. I would love to go to Kelly's island, but keep in mind I only have a 16' tri-hull so I don't know if I trust it going out past the break walls..

Cool, thanks Jonnyc.. I'll have to look into that area. I can remember when I was younger, going up to Erie with my best friend and his dad (used to spend a LOT of time on Erie and Michigan with my dad, but it was strictly fishing trips, where as my friends dad was more into pleasure boating), anyhow, I remember we went into this like, "channel" for lack of a better term... the water sat down real low, and on both sides of us there was shops and restaraunts all along that you could anchor off below and walk up the metal stairs and it was kinda like a boardwalk... Any idea where this is?? Sorry I don't have a better description, but like I said, it was when I was younger, about 20yrs ago.

Closest first
Fairport Harbor by Headlands Beach ( painesville,oh)
Vermilion Lagoons west of C-town
then a little farther is Huron,Oh...all have rivers/protected harbor and beach areas on Erie........
Then another beautiful area is Bay Point, Oh area...U can launch right across from Johnson Island in Sandusky Bay...
Johnson Isle had a Union Prison camp back during Rev; War...can tour
Then u are already in Sandusky Bay and can cruise to Cedar Point Beach & Marina...
Also check out Eat Harbor state park out there..U can camp and launch right there in harbor , go out to Lake Erie & you'll see Kellys Island right in front of u...only bout 25-30 mins away...That way u can check weather for day and head over always only being at most 15 -20 mins from safe harbor..be it East Harbor or Kellys....[/B]

Easy thing to do is go on Bing Maps and zoom in on entire coast area from Fairport 2 Sandusky ( East Harbor park)...that way u can see the set-up of water access ... Vermilion is really nice...can go to restaurants and cruise all the lagoons there..beautiful..

There are places in Pittsburgh that you can tie up and go to restaurants. Strip District on the Allegheny is one area.

Lake Tomahawk is a great place for watersports, but not big place.

(I was born in Youngstown, raised in Calcutta, and have aunt in Chester still)

My Aunt lives out on Locust Hill Road, you probably know her. ;)

Lake Tomahawk (in between Rogers and Negley) is private, of course, but there are some lots way off the lake that can probably still be purchased for under $1000. That, and your yearly dues, gets you access to the lake. I wholeheartedly recommend it as a place to learn how to waterski and stuff. Small, but not too small. Boats, but not too crowded, except on July 4th.

I have only been to Pittsburgh once on the boat, in about 1999. We stayed in Chester and took a day trip up there. I LOVED it!

A really nice vacation place that probably isn't too far from you is Deep Creek Lake, MD. You just take 68 East out of Morgantown. Maybe about an hour from Morgantown. I used to go there a lot in the 80's. Went there last year on a holiday weekend though and I will never make that mistake again. It was so crowded I didn't even go out on the lake in the middle of the afternoon. I don't know how crowded it is on regular weeks though. There are places where you can dock and get out and go to restaurants. Probably be able to beach the boat at the State Park, but I've never done that.

Actually, we live literally 2 minutes away from a launch on the Ohio River and spend countless hours boating there, unfortunately, unless we head to Pittsburgh, there's not much as far as places to stop and eat/drink around us... Today I'm REALLY hoping the weather holds out because we finally got a baby sitter for our three hel.. uhh, kids... for the whole night so the wife and I are heading to the town of Wellsburg, WV (45min. south of us), to celebrate our 9yr anniversary.. Gonna do some fishin, and stop for dinner at a restaurant I had totally forgot about called Pier 12.. They have their own dock spaces, you can moor up right there, walk up a little sidewalk and they have a big deck you can sit on and eat, have a drink or two and listen to music.. EXACTLY what I've been looking for and can't WAIT until we head out! I'll tell ya, if it starts storming here, you ALL will be able to hear me cursing! lol So please, everyone, pray to whatever God you pray to that the weather stays nice here in Countryboy's neck of the woods! haha

Pick up some Fiesta on your way by. You should be able to scale the cliff wall to get to the factory! ;)

LOL! I'm on the south side of the N.C. Lock/Dam, and steering clear of chester/newell until after the 4th, Chester is the only place having fireworks on the actual 4th this year so it's going to be INSANE up there! lol

Oh yeah, by the way.... WHO DIDN'T PRAY?!?!?

So yeah, that's part of my driveway you can see under that THREE INCHES of water that appeared after about 2 minutes of the rain! lol
