Follow up:
So I asked a few questions in this Mercury forum with little response. My Daughter picked up a 1999 Monark Aluminum boat with a 99 Mercury 25 hp 2 stroke on it.
First test run I saw it idled rough and bogged down at full throttle.
So I changed the plugs, gas filter, lower gear oil and pressure tested the two cylinders
I contemplated doing the water pump rebuild myself with a rebuild kit but I'm glad I couldn't get the linkage clip off because I wound up giving the sierra kit to a Merc dealer and I was glad I did because Iboats c/s rep sent me the wrong kit for my O/B.
I was going to also do a rebuild of the carburetor, but the OEM kit was $85. A new OEM carb was $285. The Merc dealer gets $90 an hour to do a rebuild, so I had the Merc dealer put the new carb on.
I figured for the $225 in total labor I'd rather have the pro's do it right and they could also tweak the carbs if need be and test drive it.
I picked it up today and took it out for an hour on the river and it idles great and the top end no longer bogs down and the pee stream is strong.
Total cost labor and parts and tax about $698, but she practically has a new O/B now. She only paid $2600 for the whole package, trailer plus accessories and a 2 year old Minn Kota bow mount Powerdrive V2 unit on it's own worth $475.
So I paid the $698 for peace of mind and not having to do the needed maintenance myself.
Here is a pic of her smiling with her new first boat (up from a canoe)!
