1989 Mercruiser Alpha One. Anybody have any ideas as to why when every now and then when I turn the starter switch, the solenoid doesn't engage. Maybe about 1/3 of the time. When it happens, if I keep trying, it will eventually engage. I've tightened the solenoid terminal with no success. Sound like the starter switch? Starter? Solenoid? Thanks

Hey Gadoo,
Check that you've got good clean connections on all wiring associated with the starter circuit. Take the connections off & thoroughly clean them, then re-connect. Pay particular attention to the battery ground wire.
Backlash

Hi

To me it sounds like the starter switch. It can be tested by connecting the plus pole at solenoid to the solenoid terminal from starter switch, with a little wire, but look out for shortcircuits, and prevent motor from starting. Ignition must be off. If it activates solenoid every time, key switch is bad. If not, it is probably the solenoid.

Good luck.
